About MRKAZ73

Objects made to last.

MRKAZ73 is a Cairo-born furniture studio designing objects that resist time — built from architecture, finished by hand, made to outlast the rooms they enter.

The Name

MRKAZ is the Arabic word for centre — the point from which all form radiates. 73 anchors us to 1973: the year that defined the aesthetic we return to. Warm modernism. Honest materials. Sculptural restraint. A decade that built rooms that still feel right.

We are not nostalgic. We are precise about what has always worked.

The Philosophy

We make nothing that should not exist. Every piece begins with a structural question — what is the minimum form that expresses this function completely? The answer is never obvious. It takes time. The time is the work.

We believe the most radical act in contemporary design is the refusal to follow trends. Furniture made for a season is not furniture — it is inventory. We make inventory in the opposite direction: objects that become more themselves the longer they are used.

Materials

American black walnut. White oak. Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. Brushed steel. These are not chosen for their names — they are chosen because they age truthfully. A walnut frame oiled once a year will be more beautiful in twenty years than the day it arrived. The leather will carry the memory of every room it has inhabited.

We do not use veneers. We do not use composite cores. Every structural element is solid wood, jointed by hand.

Craftsmanship

Each piece is made to order. Lead times exist because shortcuts do not. The joinery is cut by hand. The leather is sewn by craftspeople who have been doing this their entire working lives. The finish is applied by brush, sanded back, and applied again.

A numbered certificate of craft accompanies every piece. It records the piece number, the maker's name, the materials used, and the date of completion. It is not a marketing device. It is a record.

Vision

To become the defining voice of warm architectural furniture from the Arab world — globally recognised, timelessly relevant. Not the biggest. Not the most recognisable. The most considered.

We make furniture. We intend it to outlast us.
